RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 250 million children under 5 years of age are at risk of poor development in low-income and middle-income countries. However, existing early childhood development (ECD) interventions can be expensive, labour intensive and challenging to deliver at scale. Mass media may offer an alternative approach to ECD intervention. This protocol describes the planned economic evaluation of a cluster-randomised controlled trial of a radio campaign promoting responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning during the first 3 years of life in rural Burkina Faso (SUNRISE trial). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The economic evaluation of the SUNRISE trial will be conducted as a within-trial analysis from the provider's perspective. Incremental costs and health outcomes of the radio campaign will be compared with standard broadcasting (ie, 'do nothing' comparator). All costs associated with creating and broadcasting the radio campaign during intervention start-up and implementation will be captured. The cost per child under 3 years old reached by the intervention will be calculated. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios will be calculated for the trial's primary outcome (ie, incremental cost per SD of cognitive gain). A cost-consequence analysis will also be presented, whereby all relevant costs and outcomes are tabulated. Finally, an analysis will be conducted to assess the equity impact of the intervention. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The SUNRISE trial has ethical approval from the ethics committees of the Ministry of Health, Burkina Faso, University College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The results of the economic evaluation will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at a relevant international conference. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: The SUNRISE trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov on 19 April 2019 (identifier: NCT05335395).

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the levels of serum folate and vitamin B12 (VB12) and their association with the level of neurodevelopment in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A total of 324 ASD children aged 2-6 years and 318 healthy children aged 2-6 years were recruited. Serum levels of folate and VB12 were measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay. The Social Responsiveness Scale and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale were used to assess the core symptoms of ASD children, and the Gesell Developmental Schedule was employed to evaluate the level of neurodevelopment. RESULTS: The levels of serum folate and VB12 in ASD children were significantly lower than those in healthy children (P<0.05). Serum folate levels in ASD children were positively correlated with gross and fine motor developmental quotients (P<0.05), and serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with adaptive behavior, fine motor, and language developmental quotients (P<0.05). In ASD children aged 2 to <4 years, serum folate levels were positively correlated with developmental quotients in all domains (P<0.05), and serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with language developmental quotient (P<0.05). In male ASD children, serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with language and personal-social developmental quotients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Serum folate and VB12 levels in preschool ASD children are lower than those in healthy children and are associated with neurodevelopmental levels, especially in ASD children under 4 years of age. Therefore, maintaining normal serum folate and VB12 levels may be beneficial for the neurodevelopment of ASD children, especially in ASD children under 4 years of age.

Purpose: Little is known regarding differences in childhood growth between somatic and heritable retinoblastoma (Rb) populations. We aimed to compare childhood growth parameters between somatic and heritable Rb cohorts at birth and at time of diagnosis with Rb. Methods: A multinational, longitudinal cohort study was conducted with patients from 11 centers in 10 countries who presented with treatment naïve Rb from January to December 2019. Variables of interest included age, sex, and size characteristics at birth and at time of presentation, as well as germline mutation status. After Bonferroni correction, results were statistically significant if the P value was less than 0.005. Results: We enrolled 696 patients, with 253 analyzed after exclusion criteria applied. Between somatic (n = 39) and heritable (n = 214) Rb cohorts, with males and females analyzed separately, there was no significant difference in birth weight percentile, weight percentile at time of diagnosis, length percentile at time of diagnosis, weight-for-length percentile at time of diagnosis, or change of weight percentile from birth to time of diagnosis. Patients with heritable Rb had a smaller mean weight percentile at birth and smaller mean weight and length percentiles at time of diagnosis with Rb, although this difference was not statistically significant. All cohorts experienced a slight negative change of weight percentile from birth to time of diagnosis. No cohort mean percentiles met criteria for failure to thrive, defined as less than the 5th percentile. Conclusions: Children with Rb seem to have normal birth and childhood growth patterns. There is no definitive evidence that somatic or heritable Rb has a biological or environmental impact on childhood growth parameters.

Background: Aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) caused local environmental contamination in three Australian residential areas: Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT), Oakey in Queensland (Qld) and Williamtown in New South Wales (NSW). We examined whether children who lived in these areas had higher risks of developmental vulnerabilities than children who lived in comparison areas without known contamination. Methods: All children identified in the Medicare Enrolment File-a consumer directory for Australia's universal healthcare insurance scheme-who ever lived in exposure areas, and a sample of children who ever lived in selected comparison areas, were linked to the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC data were available from four cycles: 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018. For each exposure area, we estimated relative risks (RRs) of developmental vulnerability on each of five AEDC domains and a summary measure, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and other potential confounders. Findings: We included 2,429 children from the NT, 2,592 from Qld and 510 from NSW. We observed lower risk of developmental vulnerability in the Communication skills and general knowledge domain in Katherine (RR = 0.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.57 to 0.97), and higher risks of developmental vulnerability in the same domain (RR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.87) and in the Physical health and wellbeing domain in Oakey (RR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.61). Risks of developmental vulnerabilities on other domains were not different from those in the relevant comparison areas or were uncertain due to small numbers of events. Conclusion: There was inadequate evidence for increased risks of developmental vulnerabilities in children who ever lived in three PFAS-affected areas in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Nutrition and stimulation interventions promote early childhood development, but little is known about their long-term benefits in low- and middle-income countries. We conducted a follow-up study of a cluster-randomized maternal education trial performed in children aged 6 to 8 months to assess the sustainability of developmental benefits after 8 years. METHODS: The education intervention lasted 6 months and consisted of nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, and child stimulation aspects. We assessed child processing and cognitive abilities using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children Second Edition (KABC-II) and attention and inhibitory control using the Test of Variables of Attention after 8 years. The original trial included 511 mother-child pairs (intervention, n = 263; control, n = 248), whereas in the current study, 361 (71%; intervention, n = 185; control, n = 176) pairs were available for analyses. RESULTS: The intervention group scored higher than the controls (all P < .001) on all 5 KABC-II subscales and on the KABC-II global score (mean difference: 14; 95% confidence interval, 12-16; P < .001). For all 5 Test of Variables of Attention variables, the intervention group scored higher than the controls on both the visual and auditory tasks (all P < .05). Because the intervention was delivered as a package, a limitation is that we cannot pinpoint the individual contribution of each component (nutrition, hygiene, and stimulation) to the developmental benefits. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention group consistently scored markedly higher on both neuropsychological tests. Thus, even 8 years after the original maternal education intervention, the developmental benefits that we observed at child age of 1, 2, and 3 years, were sustained.

Background and Objectives: Neurodevelopment is a fragile brain process necessary for learning from the beginning of childhood to adulthood. During the procedure, several risks could affect it, including environmental factors such as neurotoxic chemicals or environmental pollutants and, within them, exposure to pesticides. Materials and Methods: This ecological descriptive study attempted to assess the association between environmental exposure to pesticides and neurodevelopmental disorders. This study was conducted on 4830 children diagnosed for 11 years in a total population of 119,897 children in three areas: high, medium, and low greenhouse concentrations. Results: Chromosomal abnormalities were the most common prenatal disorder (28.6%), while intrauterine physical factors were the least common (0.5%). Among perinatal diagnoses, gestational age less than 32 weeks was the most common (25%), while hyperbilirubinemia requiring exchange transfusion and birth complications was the least common (0.4%). Brain damage was the most common problem detected in postnatal diagnosis (36.7%), while unspecified postnatal abnormalities were the least common (3.1%). Conclusions: The areas with the highest greenhouse concentration had higher incidences of neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly in boys, and lower age of referral. Chromosomal abnormalities were prevalent for prenatal diagnoses, gestational age below thirty-two weeks for perinatal diagnoses, and brain damage for postnatal diagnoses. Future studies should analyze the connection between pesticide exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders using spatial point pattern analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in educational disruption of historic breadth and duration. The impact of school closures and remote learning have been evaluated in recent studies and reflect critical data for neuropsychologists who routinely assess brain development as it relates to diagnosis, recommendations, and informing public policy. METHOD: Pre-pandemic and contemporaneous literature was summarized, including data on educational disruption and child and adolescent mental health challenges reported during the pandemic, and research on the impact of stress, social isolation, educational achievement, and other factors on brain development during critical developmental windows. RESULTS: Studies indicate that prolonged educational disruption has resulted in attenuated learning gains, most remarkably for those already at risk for educational disparities. Studies have shown increased mental health challenges for youth during the pandemic, with higher rates of mood and eating disorders, and suicidal ideation. Given that some skills develop optimally within specific time periods, pandemic-related disruption has likely contributed to altered developmental trajectories. CONCLUSION: Trajectory of neuropsychological development of children and adolescents, especially marginalized students, may be affected by effects on learning and mental health due to prolonged educational disruption and psychological stressors. Evaluation and treatment may be delayed due to backlog and increased demand. Clinical neuropsychological practice recommendations are presented with a call to action for the field in moving forward flexibly to increase access to evaluation services.

BACKGROUND: Maternal dietary habits could affect breastmilk mineral composition, which may influence infant development. Mineral dietary intake or supplementation slightly affects its breastmilk concentration. However, the intake of selected food groups or dietary patterns that reflect diet complexity could have a greater impact. Hence, the aim of the study was to assess breastmilk mineral composition at one, three, and six months of lactation among mothers living in urban area of Central Poland, as well as the evaluate maternal dietary determinants and associations with infant anthropometric and psychomotor development. METHODS: The study was conducted among 43 healthy and exclusively breastfeeding mothers. In the first, third, and sixth months of lactation, we collected breastmilk samples and assessed the concentration of Ca, P, Zn, Fe, Se, Ni, As, Pb, and Cd using the ICP-MS method. Maternal dietary habits were evaluated by a food frequency questionnaire in the first month of lactation, whereas in the third and sixth by the three-day food record. Based on the collected data adherence to the Polish-adapted Mediterranean (Pl-aMED; 1 month) and the DASH diet (Mellen's Index; 3 and 6 months) was assessed. In the third and sixth months of lactation infant anthropometric parameters and the sixth month of lactation psychomotor development were evaluated. RESULTS: Breastmilk Se, Ni, As, Pb, and Cd levels were under the LOQ in all the breastmilk samples at all study visits. Median breastmilk mineral concentrations of Ca, P, Zn, and Fe in the first, third, and sixth months of lactation varied from 381.9 to 332.7 mg/L, 161.6 to 139.1 mg/L, 2.2 to 0.8 mg/L, and 0.26 to 0.17 mg/L, respectively. Maternal dietary intake and supplementation did not affect breastmilk Ca, P, Zn, and Fe. Pl-aMED scores were associated with breastmilk Ca (ß = 0.489, 95% CI 0.180 - 0.799, p = 0.003) and Zn (ß = 0.499, 95% CI 0.199 - 0.798, p = 0.002) in the first month of lactation, whereas no association with the DASH diet were observed in the third and sixth month of lactation. Breastmilk Fe in the third month was associated with infant motor development (ß = 0.420, 95% CI 0.113 - 0.727, p = 0.009) in the sixth month of life, but no other associations with anthropometric or psychomotor development were observed. Moreover, we estimated that few infants meet their adequate intake (AI) requirements for P, Zn, and Fe. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that maternal adherence to Pl-aMED is a significant predictor of breastmilk Ca and Zn in the first month of lactation, which may be especially important considering that more than 75% of infants had inadequate Zn intake. Moreover, we found that breastmilk Fe positively influenced infant motor development, despite the majority of infants having inadequate intake. On the other hand, no infant had deficiency symptoms, which emphasizes the necessity to evaluate of AI norms for infants.

Prenatal tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and prematurity are independent risk factors for abnormal neurodevelopment. The objectives were to compare differences in Bayley-III cognitive, language, and motor scores at 2 years corrected age (CA) in 395 infants born very preterm (≤ 32 weeks gestation) with and without prenatal TSE. We performed multivariable linear regression analyses to examine associations between prenatal TSE and neurodevelopmental outcomes and a mediation analysis to estimate direct effects of prenatal TSE on outcomes and indirect effects through preterm birth. In total, 50 (12.6%) infants had prenatal TSE. Infants with prenatal TSE had lower mean [95% CI] Cognitive score (82.8 [78.6, 87.1]) vs. nonexposed infants (91.7 [90.1, 93.4]). In children with and without prenatal TSE, there were significant differences in mean [95% CI] Language scores (81.7 [76.0, 87.4] vs. 92.4 [90.2, 94.6], respectively) and mean [95% CI] Motor scores (86.5 [82.2, 90.7] vs. 93.4 [91.8, 95.0], respectively); scores remained significant after controlling for confounders. Preterm birth indirectly mediated 9.0% of the total effect of prenatal TSE on Cognitive score (P = NS). However, 91% of the remaining total effect was significant and attributable to TSE's direct harmful effects on cognitive development (ß = - 5.17 [95% CI - 9.97, - 0.38]). The significant association is largely due to TSE's direct effect on cognitive development and not primarily due to TSE's indirect effect on preterm birth.

OBJECTIVE: The study focused on assessing the potential neurocognitive and social developmental issues in children with non-syndromic craniosynostosis (NSC) who received optimal surgical treatment. The primary objective was to determine whether NSC, even after optimal surgical treatment, could have negative effects on brain development. METHODS: The study included a total of 73 pediatric patients aged between 2 and 6 years who had previously undergone surgery for NSC at the Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery. These patients were carefully matched with 107 healthy children who visited the outpatient clinic of the same department in terms of sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, and social status. To assess the neurocognitive and social development of the participants, the child psychologist administered a developmental scale to the child and his/her family via video conference. This scale was adapted from the Bayley-III Infant and Child Development Scale by the Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Division of Pediatric Neurology. RESULTS: The study found no social or gross motor developmental issues in patients who had undergone optimal surgical treatment for NSC. However, the risk of fine motor developmental deficiencies was 4.79 times higher than that of the normal population, and the risk of language developmental deficiencies was 5.75 times higher than that of the normal population. CONCLUSIONS: Despite timely treatment of NSC, long-term neurocognitive and social development issues may arise in affected children. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor these patients after completing surgical treatment and thoroughly examine their development using a multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: The trajectories of late preterm development from infancy to kindergarten reading and math, and predictors of academic resilience and risk are unknown. METHODS: Sample included 1200 late preterm infants (LPIs) from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort. Objective measurements of development at 9 and 24 months (Bayley-SFR) and reading and math academic achievement at preschool and kindergarten were standardized; trajectories of late preterm development from 9 months to kindergarten reading and math were identified using latent class growth analysis. Multinomial logistic regression [aOR, 95% CI] identified predictors of academic resilience and risk. RESULTS: Four trajectory groups were observed for reading and three for math. More optimal trajectories (in reading and math) and academic resilience were associated with experiencing sensitive parenting and preschool attendance. Some health agencies have issued precautionary principle fish advisories to pregnant women based on the presence of methylmercury (MeHg) in fish that could possibly be harmful to the developing fetus. Fish, however, is a rich source of selenium (Se) and other nutrients essential for normal brain development. Selenium is also thought to have a key role in alleviating MeHg toxicity. We estimated the dietary Se and MeHg intakes and dietary Se:Hg molar ratios from the fish consumed in a high fish-eating pregnant cohort where no adverse associations of fish consumption and outcomes has been reported. We used dietary data collected as part of the Seychelles Child Development Study Nutrition Cohort 2 (n = 1419). In this cohort 98% of participants consumed fish, with an average intake of 106.2 g per day. Daily Se intakes from fish consumption were 61.6 µg/ d, within the range recommended during pregnancy. The mean dietary Se:Hg molar ratios was 6. These findings demonstrate that fish consumption exposes pregnant Seychellois women to Se in excess of MeHg. Based on these findings, fish consumption, especially fish with Se:Hg ratios above 1, may help pregnant women achieve optimum dietary Se intakes, which may protect against MeHg toxicity.

Abstract The objective of this study is to determine the impact of oral conditions on the quality of life related to the oral health of preschool children in a rural and urban area of Cusco. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional, from a population of 179 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years, from two public early childhood education institutions, and their respective parents or caregivers in the department of Cusco, Peru. We worked with the entire population that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, seventy-four preschool children were selected for each area, deciding to have the same amount of children per group based on the smallest group. A clinical odonto-stomatological examination was carried out for oral conditions (dental caries, malocclusion, and dental trauma) according to the WHO's criteria and a survey that was used for sociodemographic characteristics. In addition, a validated Peruvian version of the ECOHIS questionnaire was used to obtain data on the impact on quality of life. All the variables of the total and individual scores of the ECOHIS domains were analyzed individually and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine the association between variables. The oral conditions prevalence in preschool children in rural areas referring to dental caries was 100% (dmft index > 6), dental trauma 10.8%, and malocclusions 60.8%; for the urban area dental caries was 93.2% (dmft index > 6), dental trauma 9.5% and malocclusions 36.5%. Of the three oral conditions only the experience of dental caries was related to the OHRQOL of preschoolers in urban and rural areas.


Resumen El objetivo de este estudio es determinar el impacto de las alteraciones bucales en la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud bucal de niños preescolares de una zona rural y urbana de Cusco. El estudio fue descriptivo y transversal, de una población de 179 preescolares de 3 a 5 años de edad, de dos instituciones públicas de educación inicial, y sus respectivos padres o cuidadores en el departamento de Cusco, Perú. Se trabajó con toda la población que cumplió con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se seleccionaron setenta y cuatro niños preescolares por cada área, decidiendo tener la misma cantidad de niños por grupo en base al grupo más pequeño. Se realizó un examen clínico odonto-estomatológico para detectar alteraciones bucales (caries dental, maloclusión y trauma dental) según los criterios de la OMS y una encuesta que se utilizó para las características sociodemográficas. Además, se utilizó una versión peruana validada del cuestionario ECOHIS para obtener datos sobre el impacto en la calidad de vida. Todas las variables de los puntajes totales e individuales de los dominios ECOHIS fueron analizadas individualmente y se utilizó la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis para determinar la asociación entre variables. La prevalencia de alteraciones bucales en niños preescolares de zonas rurales referida a caries dental fue del 100% (índice dmft > 6), traumatismo dental 10,8% y maloclusiones 60,8%; para la zona urbana la caries dental fue del 93,2% (índice dmft > 6), el traumatismo dental 9,5% y las maloclusiones 36,5%. De las tres alteraciones bucales, sólo la experiencia de caries dental se relacionó con la OHRQOL de los preescolares de las zonas urbana y rural.

Objetivo: mapear las características de las intervenciones para promover el desarrollo infantil que utilizaron el Modelo Touchpoints. Método: se trata de una revisión de alcance, guiada por las recomendaciones del JBI Reviewer's Manual, realizada en nueve bases de datos, en la literatura gris y en la lista de referencias de los estudios seleccionados. La pregunta de investigación fue "¿cuáles son las características de las intervenciones con padres/cuidadores y niños para promover el desarrollo infantil, desde el embarazo hasta los seis años, con base en el Modelo Touchpoints?". Se utilizó el Rayyan para la selección de los estudios y un guión para la extracción de datos. El análisis se realizó de forma descriptiva. Resultados: se incluyeron doce publicaciones. Las intervenciones fueron heterogéneas; concentradas en el período comprendido entre el embarazo y los tres años de edad; priorizó la difusión del contenido de los Touchpoints según la edad y los aspectos de parentalidad; la mayoría fueron realizadas por enfermeros, en la Atención Primaria de Salud y durante las visitas domiciliarias. Las intervenciones se relacionaron con el desarrollo general, una mayor comprensión del desarrollo y una mayor interacción con el niño. Conclusión: los estudios han demostrado potencial para obtener resultados favorables para el desarrollo infantil y la parentalidad. La variabilidad de las intervenciones dificultó el mapeo de las características más efectivas."


Objective: to map the characteristics of interventions to promote child development that used the Touchpoints Model. Method: this is a scoping review, guided by the recommendations of the JBI Reviewer's Manual, carried out in nine databases, in the gray literature and in the reference list of the selected studies. The research question was "what are the characteristics of interventions with parents/caregivers and children to promote child development, from pregnancy to six years of age, based on the Touchpoints Model?". Rayyan was used for the selection of studies and a standard form for data extraction. The analysis was carried out descriptively. Results: twelve publications were included in the review. Interventions were heterogeneous; concentrated in the period from pregnancy to three years of age; prioritized the dissemination of Touchpoints content according to age, and parenting aspects; most were performed by nurses, in Primary Health Care, and during home visits. Interventions were related to overall development, greater understanding of development and greater interaction with the child. Conclusion: studies have shown potential for favorable outcomes for child development and parenting. The variability of interventions made it difficult to map more effective characteristics.

Método: revisão de escopo, guiada pelas recomendações do JBI Reviewer's Manual realizada em nove bases de dados, na literatura cinzenta e na lista de referências dos estudos selecionados. A questão de pesquisa foi: quais são as características das intervenções com pais/cuidadores e crianças para promoção do desenvolvimento infantil, da gestação até os seis anos de idade, baseadas no Modelo Touchpoints? Foram utilizados o Rayyan, para a seleção dos estudos, e um roteiro, para a extração de dados. A análise foi realizada de forma descritiva. Resultados: foram incluídas doze publicações. As intervenções eram heterogêneas; concentradas no período da gestação até os três anos de idade; priorizaram a disseminação de conteúdo dos Touchpoints segundo idade e aspectos de parentalidade; a maioria foi realizada por enfermeiros na Atenção Primária à Saúde e na visita domiciliar. As intervenções foram relacionadas ao desenvolvimento global, à maior compreensão sobre o desenvolvimento e à maior interação com a criança. Conclusão: os estudos evidenciaram potencial para resultados favoráveis ao desenvolvimento infantil e à parentalidade. A variabilidade das intervenções dificultou mapear características mais efetivas.

BACKGROUND: Positive early development is critical in shaping children's lifelong health and wellbeing. Identifying children at risk of poor development is important in targeting early interventions to children and families most in need of support. We aimed to develop a predictive model that could inform early support for vulnerable children. METHODS: We analysed linked administrative records for a birth cohort of 2,380 Northern Territory children (including 1,222 Aboriginal children) who were in their first year of school in 2015 and had a completed record from the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC measures early child development (school readiness) across five domains of development. We fitted prediction models, for AEDC weighted summary scores, using a Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) considering four groups of factors-pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, known at birth, and child-related factors. We first assessed the models' internal validity and then the out-of-sample predictive power (external validity) using the PLSpredict procedure. RESULT: We identified separate predictive models, with a good fit, for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children. For Aboriginal children, a significant pre-pregnancy predictor of better outcomes was higher socioeconomic status (direct, ß = 0.22 and indirect, ß = 0.16). Pregnancy factors (gestational diabetes and maternal smoking (indirect, ß = -0.09) and child-related factors (English as a second language and not attending preschool (direct, ß = -0.28) predicted poorer outcomes. Further, pregnancy and child-related factors partially mediated the effects of pre-pregnancy factors; and child-related factors fully mediated the effects of pregnancy factors on AEDC weighted scores. For non-Aboriginal children, pre-pregnancy factors (increasing maternal age, socioeconomic status, parity, and occupation of the primary carer) directly predicted better outcomes (ß = 0.29). A technical observation was that variance in AEDC weighted scores was not equally captured across all five AEDC domains; for Aboriginal children results were based on only three domains (emotional maturity; social competence, and language and cognitive skills (school-based)) and for non-Aboriginal children, on a single domain (language and cognitive skills (school-based)). CONCLUSION: The models give insight into the interplay of multiple factors at different stages of a child's development and inform service and policy responses. Recruiting children and their families for early support programs should consider both the direct effects of the predictors and their interactions. The content and application of the AEDC measurement need to be strengthened to ensure all domains of a child's development are captured equally.

AIM: We evaluated fine motor skills; precision, motor integration, manual dexterity, and upper-limb coordination according to sex and risk stratification in children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). METHODS: We evaluated twenty-nine children in the maintenance phase aged 6 to 12 years with the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-second edition (BOT-2), and sex and age-specific norm values of BOT-2 were used to compare our results. RESULTS: We found lower scores on the upper-limb coordination subtest, p = 0.003 and on the manual coordination composite, p = 0.008, than normative values. Most boys performed "average" on both the subtests and the composites, but girls showed lower scores with a mean difference of 7.69 (95%CI; 2.24 to 3.14), p = 0.009. Girls' scale scores on the upper-limb coordination subtest were lower than normative values, with mean difference 5.08 (95%CI; 2.35 to 7.81), p = 0.006. The mean standard score difference in high-risk patients was lower than normative on the manual coordination composite, 8.18 (95%CI; 2.26 to 14.1), p = 0.015. High-risk children also performed below the BOT-2 normative on manual dexterity 2.82 (95%CI; 0.14 to 5.78), p = 0.035 and upper limb coordination subtest 4.10 (95%CI; 1.13 to 7.05), p = 0.028. We found a decrease in fine motor precision in children with a higher BMI, rho= -0.87, p = 0.056 and a negative correlation between older age and lower manual dexterity, r= -0.41 p = 0.026; however, we did not find any correlation with the weeks in the maintenance phase. CONCLUSIONS: Fine motor impairments are common in children with ALL in the maintenance phase; it is important to identify these impairments to early rehabilitation.

Introducción: El desarrollo psicomotor es un proceso gradual y continuo; las familias cubanas necesitan herramientas que les permitan vigilarlo. Objetivo: Describir las percepciones que poseen las familias de la vigilancia del desarrollo psicomotor de sus hijos menores de un año. Métodos: Se realizó una investigación cualitativa, de tipo fenomenológica, en el Consultorio del Médico y la Enfermera de la Familia No. 9 del Policlínico Universitario Héroes del Moncada, La Habana, de noviembre 2019 a febrero 2022. El referente teórico fue el Modelo de Traducción del Conocimiento. Las unidades de análisis fueron ocho familias que tenían un niño menor de un año, a las que se aplicó el Método Creativo Sensible, mediante la dinámica de arte del Árbol del conocimiento. Se grabaron las sesiones, y las narrativas fueron transcritas en un cuerpo textual a las que se les realizó análisis de contenido. Resultados: Las familias expresaron que la llegada del niño significó alegría y unión familiar; así como la necesidad de contar con diferentes materiales que ayudaran para la vigilancia del desarrollo psicomotor. De las 33 pautas analizadas fue necesario traducir tres al lenguaje familiar. Conclusiones: El nacimiento de un hijo tuvo un efecto favorable. La dinámica empleada fue efectiva para el propósito de la descripción de las pautas del desarrollo psicomotor para niños cubanos por las familias estudiadas. Se evidenció la necesidad de algún tipo de herramienta para la vigilancia del desarrollo psicomotor(AU)


Introduction: Psychomotor development is a gradual and continuous process; Cuban families need tools that allow them to monitor it. Objective: To describe the families' perceptions with respect to monitoring the psychomotor development of their infants aged less than one year. Methods: A qualitative research, of phenomenological type, was carried out in the family doctor and nurse's office 9, belonging to Policlínico Universitario Heroes del Moncada, of Havana, from November 2019 to February 2022. The theoretical reference was the knowledge translation model. The units of analysis were 8 families with an infant aged less than one year and applied the creative sensitive method, using the art dynamics of the tree of knowledge. The sessions were recorded, and the narratives were transcribed into a textual body later subjected to content analysis. Results: The families expressed that the arrival of the child meant joy and family unity, as well as the need to have different materials that help monitor the child's psychomotor development. Of the 33 guidelines analyzed, it was necessary to translate three into a family language. Conclusions: The birth of a child had a favorable effect. The used dynamics was effective for the purpose that the studied families describe psychomotor development guidelines for their Cuban children. The need for some kind of tool for monitoring of psychomotor development was evidenced(AU)
